He started playing volleyball from the age of seven, learning the basics of this game under the guidance of his mother, Alina Rosario, who became his first coach. The first match for the national team of Cuba was held at the age of 14, on May 24, 2008 in Dusseldorf, replacing the fourth set of the match of the world Olympic qualifying tournament against the German team . On June 21, 2008 in Havana, Wilfredo Leon played the first World League match in which the Cuban team met with the Russian team. Appearing on the court at the end of the second set, he played the entire third game and brought his team 6 points. In the World League tournament of 2009, Wilfredo was already the main player of the Cuban national team and, moreover, he became the third in terms of performance and the best serveer according to the results of the “Final Six” in Belgrade (56 points in four matches, including 10 aces). A few days after the end of the World League, on July 31, 2009, when Wilfredo was exactly 16 years old, he held the first match of the Youth World Championships in Indian Pune. Naturally, the Cuban was the youngest participant in this championship, which culminated in the silver success of his team (previously Cuban volleyball players went up to the podium of the World Youth Championship only once - in 1987). Wilfredo Leon had the second highest score in his team after Rolando Cepeda, who is almost four years older.
