I realized that such a night could not be repeated, that my strongest desire - that my mother be with me while the dreary hours of the night drag on - comes into irreconcilable conflict with the vital necessity and with the desires of all the other members of the family, and that today I have been given the opportunity to realize only as a special favor and exception.
